And now I am pleased to show you the finished 1972 airstream!

Still here!

Hi everyone! It has been along time since I've posted but going forward I will be putting more effort towards the blog. And although its been a long time since a recent update it dosent mean progress has stopped. Yes... this remodel has been going one since 2010 but as a disclosure I also do this for a living and spend 90% of my time on other builds. Just trying not to discourage any newcomers that might see 8 years of work as crazy. So Im back on board with the site with plenty new awesome pictures and information coming soon! Also Ill be back online to answer any questions you may have. thanks everyone!

Airstream wine rack

Hello everyone! So I have a side project Ive been hired to do for a friends airstream. This is a 22 foot 2001 international airstream that belongs to a friend of ours and I have been asked to remodel the seating area and install a wine rack. Also I will be adding a upper shelf for a TV, a drop down leaf and replacing the curtains in the front.

Custom Wine Rack

Here is the first finished install. This was the storage for the wall divider. When closed, it would house the accordion door. She decided she likes the idea of having a curtain attached on the other side of the airstream instead. A curtain divider will be easier to use and enhance the inside appearance of the airstream. The area where the door was would no longer be needed and I suggested installing a wine rack in its place. She was totally on-board for the idea so I started on the design.

Finished result:

 Before:

Closed:                                                                                                          Open:

First I removed the accordion door and extended the closet wall by 2.5" giving the bottles more room and allowing them to sit at a 45 degree angle. Next I started making each holder with routed in LED lighting.

After each holder was covered in trunk lining I attached them to the side support (left side of the inside wall of the closet)

It looks strange right now but it will all come together in the end.

Here is the unit propped up in the workshop. I added some wine bottles to make sure everything was on par

After the unit was basically built I made leather button straps for each holder to secure the bottles during towing.

8 made for each bottle
Installed chrome buttons

Functional and stylish!

Final results: AWESOME!

 LED lighting came out perfect.

It took about 2 days to design and complete. Holds 8 bottles and has 27 LED lights. Also I added a trip switch at the top of the rack that activated when the door is closed. LED lights automatically come on as soon as the door is open about 1"

Decals, LED lights and buffing!

Well, I finally had time to install the new LED running lights for the Airstream and they look amazing! I also had time to put on our new Wally Byam numbers on.

NUMBER ONE QUESTION ABOUT POLISHING:

QUESTION: “What do you seal the Airstream with after you’re done polishing?”

ANSWER: "Nothing"

Some people say you need to seal it with a wax or Walbernize. Sealing an airstream after polishing will help with oxidation and prolong your polish about another 6 months. But the down side is oxidation will eventually happen no matter what sealer you use. And after a year it will need to be polished again. But before that can happen the sealer you used will have to be removed first creating twice the work. In my opinion, just polish every 6 months or so. I went a year and it wasn’t that difficult to bring it back to a mirror finish.

This is the final pass on the airstream! Finished with Nuvite S grade.
